My Prefecture receipt has expired. What should I do?

In this case, you must absolutely request the renewal of this document, within 15 days before its expiry.

What is the receipt?

The receipt is a document proving the registration of your application for a residence permit at the prefecture (or sub-prefecture) of your domicile. It authorizes you to stay in France for the duration it specifies.

The receipt is firstly used to prove that your application for a residence permit at the prefecture (or sub-prefecture) of your place of residence has been registered. Indeed, this temporary residence document is only issued when the application is submitted. The latter authorizes you to stay in France while examining your file. And depending on the situation, it also allows you to work.

What is the difference with certificate Residence Card

When you apply for a residence permit online, you receive a temporary document called an attestation. This document allows you in some cases to work.
There are several types of certificate:

Certificate of submission of application for a residence

permit When you submit a request for a residence permit by teleservice, you immediately receive a dematerialized certificate of online submission. This certificate is not a temporary residence document. It does not justify the regularity of your stay. The online deposit certificate is not a temporary residence document. It has no validity period. This certificate does not authorize you to work.

 

Certificate of extension of the examination of the application for a residence

permit If you submit a complete residence permit application file within the time limit imposed on you by the regulations, you will receive, via the teleservice, a certificate of extension of instruction. This certificate is a provisional residence document which justifies the regularity of your stay. The certificates prolonging the processing of the residence permit application and the favorable decision on the residence permit application are valid for a maximum of 3 months. They are renewed by the prefecture (or sub-prefecture) until a decision has been taken on the application for a residence permit.

When the prefecture (or sub-prefecture) takes a favorable decision following your application, it gives you a certificate of favorable decision, via the teleservice.

This certificate is a provisional residence document which justifies the regularity of your stay.

 

Who should have it?

It’s very simple, if you are a foreigner and you have applied for a residence permit (first application, renewal or duplicate), you must have a receipt.  You are concerned if you are a foreigner and apply for a residence permit (1stapplication , renewal or duplicate).

In which cases does this document allow you to work?

You should know that while waiting to obtain your residence permit (first issue or renewal), the receipt will also allow you to work in the following cases:

  • Temporary residence permit (employee or temporary worker) Temporary
  • residence permit (research employment or business creation)
  • Temporary residence permit (private and family life)
  • Multi-year residence permit (talent passport: European blue card, researcher, mobility program)
  • Multi-year residence permit (family talent passport)
  • Multi-year residence permit (ICT seconded employee, ICT mobile seconded employee, ICT family seconded employee or ICT family mobile seconded employee)
  • Multi-year residence permit (seasonal worker)
  • Multi-year residence permit (beneficiary of subsidiary protection, family member of a beneficiary of subsidiary protection, beneficiary of stateless status or family member of a beneficiary of stateless status)
  • resident card
  • Cert1-year residence certificate (private and family life)
  • 10-year residence certificate for Algerian

How long is it valid?

This document issued when registering a residence request is valid for a period of 4 to 6 months depending on the case. A period allowing the prefecture to examine each file and subsequently produce the residence permit. However, it may exceptionally be renewed for a maximum period of 3 months in the case of a renewal or duplicate residence permit.

You will then receive a new receipt, the validity date of which begins the day after the expiry date of your residence permit.

What to do when the receipt has expired?

The first thing you need to know is that you have the possibility to request the renewal of this document, so don’t panic. However, this can only be done by appointment with your prefecture or sub-prefecture. With the exception of receipts issued by the one-stop shop for asylum seekers (after obtaining international protection). You should also know that the request for renewal of the receipt must be filed at the earliest 15 days before its expiry date. Otherwise, any request registered before will be directly classified without follow-up.

The documents to present at the counter:

  1. A passport or any other type of document that can prove your identity (travel document, consular card, driving licence, etc.)
  2. A receipt for the application for a residence permit that is about to expire
  3. A photo recent and compliant identity card

A change of situation:

In the event that you have had to change your address, family or professional situation, you can always provide the supporting documents requested when renewing your receipt. This is to keep your file up to date.

A receipt issued by another prefecture:

For applications that were submitted before moving (to another prefecture), it will be necessary to reschedule an appointment and submit a new file (first application, renewal, duplicate, etc.). The receipt will therefore only be renewed after the filing of the supporting documents requested.
