A foreigner living in France who is seriously ill can obtain, if they meet several conditions, a Visa to receive medical treatment.
To obtain a visa to receive medical treatment in France, you must apply for a long-stay visa for medical care, also called “medical visa“. The “visa for medical reasons” is a visa specially designed for treatment in France, for care and a stay of limited duration. Obtaining such a visa requires payment in advance for the treatment (therefore a quote and proof of payment in advance). When you have made some research, it is advisable to get some help to structure and file your application for a medical visa.
You can obtain a temporary residence card private and family life for care if you complete the whole of the following conditions:
- You are a foreigner (except a citizen of a European country)
- You usually reside in France
- Your condition requires medical care without which your health would become critical
- You cannot access the appropriate treatment in your country of origin
- You do not represent a threat to public order
Documents to present
You must present the following documents:
- Full copy of birth certificate including the most recent information, accompanied if necessary by the judicial decision ordering its transcription
- Passport (pages concerning civil status, validity dates, entry stamps and visas)

or certificate of nationality less than 6 months old with photo

The Ofii doctor may request, with your agreement, additional medical information from the doctor who issued the medical certificate or from any other health professional.
This additional information must reach the Ofii doctor within 15 days from the date of the request.
The Ofii doctor can also summon you for a medical examination (free) if he deems it necessary and ask you for additional examinations (you do not have to pay anything). You will need to present proof of identity.
The results of these examinations must be communicated to the Ofii doctor within 15 days from the date of the request.
Wait for the Prefect’s decision
The opinion delivered by the Ofii college of doctors is a simple opinion. It does not bind the prefect.
The prefect exercises his discretion to decide whether to grant or refuse the “private and family life” residence permit for care.
